156 Aircon caught fire and Aux belt question

Firstly, Hi as Im a new member. Hopefully you guys can help me out. My sister has an 156 1.8 2002 Sportswagon. Which promptly caught fire yesterday via the air con compressor seizing without warning. So maybe a safety note for other users:
Unfortunately she is not in a position to afford a replacement unit at this time, and as were on the Isle of Wight we have no local dealer to consult. Can anyone advise if I can purchase the Aux drive belt for the 1.8 without the air con and take the compressor out of the circuit for now?

Cheers

Re: 156 Aircon caught fire and Aux belt question

Hello, sorry to hear about this.

You can remove the A/C from the system easily. You will also need to take out one pully (large one near the top).

The belt you need is part number 60815889. Although confirm with a dealer against your VIN number. You would need to get it from a UK dealer, but i would have thought any would post to the Isle of White. Price is around £15 for the belt.

Also if you speak with them ask for the length, if they can tell you say thanks very much, take that length and your old belt to a local motor factors and they will supply a replacement. (you have to take your old belt as some belts have 6 grooves, and some 5).

Hope this has helped you.

The one in that top picture is 6 ribs and 1053 mm long,as mentioned with that info you should be able to get it locally.

Running a tape measure around the relevant pulleys will give you a close enough idea to confirm the size anyway.

Yes thats the one, now you have the length - 1053mm. Take your old belt to a motor factors near you and tell them you'd like the same belt but in a length of 1053mm with the same number of ribs.

You will still need to remove the top tensioner, but its a very easy job to do that and refit the new belt.
