8V DOHC 150ish BHP chain driven cam.

Mine used oil when driven really hard - would notice pressure drop on v. hard left cornering when level dropped to refill point (1 litre loss).

Should be bulletproof if maintained

Timing chain rattle is another thing. Not really a problem, just about the only fault I ever had on mine. They really were brilliant engines.

i'd have to say i think they're pretty bullet proof, i know mine has never given me trouble, i suppose once they're looked after, oil, filters etc, they should stay in good shape.

Re: 164 TS 2 Litre engine

why did they move from the bullet proof, chain driven twink to the more fragile fiat based modern twink?

My guess is a mixture of cost, emissions (maybe??), but most importantly of all............16v.

Didn't look good for such a brand as Alfa Romeo to be the only 8v engine left, even if it was the best

edit: Oh yes, and 5bhp extra

Is your car on carzone by any chance?? If it is I was looking at it. Was going to give ya a call to buy it just need to find a spot to park it up first haha.

Looks like a very very very well kept car.

yup its mine alright! Sadly i'm having to sell the old girl, as all my time will be devoted to putting my Lancia back on the road & i don't want the 164 just sitting around.

Yeah she's in great condition, its funny i was reversing out of my drive this morning & my headlights lit up the 164, & i literally sat there for a minute or so just looking at her! I really will be sad to lose her but i can't justify holding onto her.

I really enjoyed reading that thread you linked me too. Car looks great, my car has developed an Oil leak so if that isn't too pricey to fix, I will let you know about my intentions. And must find a spot to park the car too lol.

And heavier!

Surely they could have redone the head to have 16 valves? My guess is it's just that Alfa didn't want to be producing their own blocks any more. Shame Fiat couldn't have taken over the Alfa blocks rather than the other way round.

It could come across as being nostalgic and "everything used to be better", but I honestly believe Alfa have slowly been going downhill with their engines.

Re: 164 TS 2 Litre engine

Another advantage with the old 8V engine is fuel economy. I used to get 36mpg with my last 164 and now I get 30mpg with my 1.8 156

Re: 164 TS 2 Litre engine

The 2.0 164 was exceptional for fuel economy - IIRC it was the best in the whole Alfa range at the time.

I don't know the weight range for the 8v vs 16v engine - anyone?

It'd be interesting to know, I'm only assuming it's lighter as it was alloy rather than iron.
