Hmmm 147 Change in Engine Noise after Cambelt Change

Hello

Ive got a 2002 147 selespeed and have just had the cambelt changed at 70k miles.

I just wondered if it was normal for the engine to sound different after this, it now has a much deeper, louder sound to it when accelerating. Has anyone else noticed this?

Thanks

Need to have heard it before, and after, to have some idea.: Wouldn't be too concerned, unless it's a horrible noise. Probably sounds as it should with new belts, and you grew used to the different sound with the old set up.:

Did you have the variator done as well?

I'd have thought it'd make the engine sound quieter if done

Heh, true - didn't read it in any detail I have to say!

Maybe they changed the air filter, but rather than change it, they just removed it altogether! Lovely induction roar

Re: 147 Change in Engine Noise after Cambelt Change

Our 2002 147 was the same - immediately after the cambelt change it sounded a bit gruff. Turned out to be a failing variator, requiring replacement 6 weeks later....

How's your fuel consumption? When the variator started failing our 147 used ~10% more petrol.

I havnt really noticed a change in fuel consumption to be honest. As far as i know they just changed the cam belt and not the air filter or variator. It was done at alfa workshop in royston which was recommended on her by a few people.

Re: 147 Change in Engine Noise after Cambelt Change

Have had my 147 02model for about 5 weeks now, the cambelt was changed b4 I bought it on 35000 miles. I noticed it sounded like a diesel when i drove out of the garage where I bought it. Anyway reading on here its the variator, I have now noticed a whirring noise also which reading on here is the water pump. The car still has 2 months left of the warranty it came with from the dealer I bought it off, they are looking at it Friday morning to hear what it sounds like on 1st start up. Lets see if they honour this warranty and replace the faulty parts all free of charge.

Re: 147 Change in Engine Noise after Cambelt Change

Have just spoken to the garage who sold me the Alfa, they have said the noise is comin from a heat shield around the exhaust system in the engine bay & is not the variator! is this possible? am I getting fobbed off?

Re: 147 Change in Engine Noise after Cambelt Change

If it sounds like a diesel on startup it's more often than not the variator. I would have thought the sound from the heat shield would be more 'clangy' as its metal or metal - not sure though, the first owner of my car had to have the shield replaced after 500 miles :s

I would say, based on that, you are been fobbed off. But need other opinions on the heat shield sound first. And, the variator is a reasonably big job, so they won't be going head over heels to do it.

Re: 147 Change in Engine Noise after Cambelt Change

Cheers chrisnolan, yes most definatly a diesel sound not a clangy tiney vibration. Apparantly it goes away after a few minutes so they say once the engine has warmed up, will have to try that one out!! The whirring noise is down to according to them the cambelt settling in on the pullies as its just been done, needs to be run is apparantly!! More fobbing off I guess?
