Help 147 - New Engine? Please help

Hi,

I have a 147 which has done 55,000 miles and is 1.6 02 plate.

It broke down on me on Friday night, started fine, drove for 10 mins, stopped at lights and would not start again.

The police turned up and managed (just) to start it again and it got me home (1/2 mile)

They suggested the starter motor had gone, however got the local Alfa specialists to come and have a look at home, they didn't know what was wrong and towed it to their garage.

Call from them today to tell me I needed a new engine as "the bottom is rattling about" and that "the crank shaft had gone" this is going to cost me 3-5k!!!! As you can imagine, I'm gutted.

They said that I could get it taken off my hands as it is now for 1,000 cash.

Im in a dilemma, has anyone else EVER had anything like this happen?
Should I get a 2nd opinion?
If it is as they said above, is the 1,000 realistic to get for it?

I would be extremely greatful if anyone has any suggestions and honest answers as to whether I should cut my losses and take the 1,000.

Thank you so much.

The third one from ItalAutos - they do loads of engines. I think AutoLusso do engine replacements too, try sending a private message to the user 'AutoLusso' and see what Ned can do for you

You will probably find someone has let the oil run low in the past ... kills Alfa's. Or it has suffered a cambelt failure and the big-ends were damaged and the shells not replaced.

Don't take the money ... get a new engine. They will buy your car for grand, spend less again getting the engine sorted (remember they will only have to pay for parts) and put it back on the forecourt for a tidy profit. Don't give them the satisfaction.

You don't say where you are in the world (assume UK!), but if you give us a vague idea we may be able to point you at a good Alfa specialist who won't take you to the cleaners.

cheers, Gary

If you want to treck down to Hampshire there's a couple of good independants round here -

A & M Alfas near Fareham & Southern Alfas in Hedge End near Southampton. I've only used A & M but Southern come recommended too
