engine oil

What grade do you guys use I know in the book it says 10w60 is this the norm I have a 2.0 jts with 100 k on it and want to make sure I'm looking after it properly thanks. Also Checking oil book says 5 mins after stopping whilst warm ?

10w60 is good, yes. Something slightly different, like 5w40 or 10w40 wouldn't make much difference - the engine isn't that sensitive. Not like modern turbo engines.

Always check oil with the engine fully warmed up and a few minutes after stopping the engine. The few minutes' wait is to let the oil drain out of the galleries in the head and elsewhere and collect back in the sump.

I think the JTS prefers 10W60 ...

I've always checked oil when cold .. engine, not me.

I also check mine when cold now. I started off doing it five minutes after a drive but couldn't really get a reliable level off the dipstick even after quiet a few wipes! 10/60 is recommended in the handbook but mine used loads so my local specialist suggested Selenia 10/40 semi-synth. It does seem to be using a bit less of that than the fully synth 10/60. Your engine will put up with either weight apparently.

When my V6 3.0 was on Selenia Racing (not sure if that is semi or fully synthetic) it did noticeably burn oil. Since putting in Millers 5w50 (fully synthetic) it doesn't burn a single drop...8,000 miles, not a drop. However with the Millers, after spirited driving and then returning to tick-over the oil pressure light comes on.....which never happened with the Selenia racing...

strange how the engine burns the thick Selenia oil but not the thin Millers oil....and the Millers oil is almost like water...but technically it is rated thicker when hot than 10w40....

next time I will try something else....I would be happy with the Millers....except for the very low oil pressure on tick-over when the oil is hot, although maybe this may be the pressure sensor not being set up for this type of oil..?

The millers is probably less volatile. Under heat it is staying as oil instead of ending up as vapour and being pushed out through the breather system.

I would be tempted to try something like Fuchs Titan Race pro S Fuly synthetic.

the problem with a 5W-50 is there there is a massive gap between the cold viscosity rating and the hot. The oil will be a thin oil, with added viscosity index improvers to make it thin less when hot (so it still behaves like a 50) the problem is that these additives break down over time, and you end up with a thinner oil when it is hot.

The bigger the viscosity gap, the more VI improvers and the more it happens.
