What is this odd whiney sound from the engine??

It sounds like a electic motor whine that changes in pitch depending on throttle - more throttle higher the pitch and tends to occur between 2k and 3.5k rpm. Above 3.5k rpm it seems to fade away and is replaced by the normal "roar" of the engine.

Never noticed this whiney electric motor type sound before. Very noticeable in 2nd gear, less noticeable in 3rd as there's more tyre rubble due to the greater speed.

Any ideas as to what it could be? And could it indicate that something is about to fail?

Incidentally, the car is a 147 1.6 2001 which belongs to my wife.

I have been told its due to a failing power steering pump. my 2003 147 selespeed does the same

Check all of what ZF says, but do it quickly. If the idlers or tensioners on the cam belt are about to fail your next few miles could prove v costly

Re: What is this odd whiney sound from the engine??

Cambelt/variator has been done by PeakAlfa in Derbyshire about 5 months ago, though annoyingly they didn't change the water pump. The whining sound wasn't there afer they changed the cambelt/variator - it only started about 3/4 weeks ago.

Does this narrow things down a bit?

I notice a very faint whine at 70-80 mph in 5th gear. Never at any other speed or gear. Goes away when you give it the beans....

IIRC, could be wrong of course, I think David C and others said the 147's water pump was not inclined to failure that often? Best bet probably, is to let them have it back and see if they can pin-point it I would guess?:

Got the same problem, going to peak alfa on tuesday to get the variator done and new cambelt, tensioners, waterpump etc I'll ask them for help on the whining/whirring sound while its in or if the waterpump clears up the problem

i always use a length of hosepipe to identify the noisy bearing. stick one end in your ear and the other end close to the bearing on every pulley driven by every belt. you can easily tell which one is the noisy one.

Re: What is this odd whiney sound from the engine??

Does the pitch of the noise change when you switch the lights and heated rear window on? If it does it could be the alternator bearings.

Also worth checking is the tensioner for the auxuillary belt, as well as the fixed idler. There is a chance they were not done when the cambelt was done. (most places that offer bargain cambelt changes miss these as it adds quite a bit to the overall price)

There is also the chance that the power steering pump is making the noise, the pitch of the noise will probably chance when you turn the steering if this is the case.

Mine's just started doing exactly the same thing after a full cambelt service in August and just 1200 miles since. It's going back in to the supplying dealer on Tuesday so I will report back.

My wifes 147 1.6ts had the same problem, seemed more lethargic and fuel consumption increased. Went back to dealer diagnosis without seeing car: power steering pump or alternator, car went in & came out with a new alternator. Apparently bearings had disintegrated and was almost impossible to turn.

I'm sorry jug ... can't help myself on that one ... I can just see you, one the side of the road with the hood up 'listening' to your engine with a piece of tubing ... passers by must think you are totally warped

Sorry, not making fun, just thought it sounded really funny (like I can really laugh, my 147 Selespeed is in the shop getting what the guy 'thinks' is a Selector replaced ... 2nd Major fault with the car in less than 2 months!!

Re: What is this odd whiney sound from the engine??

Mine came back and the specialist (which is very good) said nothing was out of the ordinary but agreed that any noise should be monitored and the car returned if any further concern arises.

Hope I'm not becoming paranoid!

Re: What is this odd whiney sound from the engine??

Same here, had the work done at Peakalfa, changed the waterpump along with variator auxiliary tensioners etc but still got the noise, Roger did say that after a new cambelt they sometimes can whine but should disappear after a 1000mls or so, so it definitely wasnt the waterpump, not much else to change, just going to wait and see if it gets any worse.
