Alfa 156 Cam Belt Failure

Hi everyone!

I have a '99 156 2.0 TS. I've just had a cambelt fail on me. I'm trying to source as much info as I can as to the repair as I have a mechanic that would be doing the job for me. I do require some specialised tools I believe and as much info on how to properly go about the job. Any info greatly appreciate.

Thanks in advance

Unfortunately this can be a real problem as I have found out from my own experience. You can repair the head with the engine in situ fairly inexpensively as head rebuilds go.

The problem however is the damage is usually far worse than just the head. Unless you are very, very lucky you will probably find the main bearings (big ends) will fail within 6k of the rebuild. This will be an expensive full rebuild. The damage seems to be done by the force of the piston hitting the valves. If you inend to keep the vehicle it may be worth getting a replacement engine or having yours fully rebuilt.

Sorry to be the bringer of bad news. I hope you get it sorted soon.

Re: Alfa 156 Cam Belt Failure

Appreciate the advice. This I suppose I would only find out once the head has been removed. I most definitely would like to keep the car as I have kinda been spoilt by the Alfa and not been able to go to anything else. The belt snapped or broke at idle speed. Do you think this would have an effect on the extent of the damage.

Re: Alfa 156 Cam Belt Failure

If it snapped at Idle then you might be okay, It's when the engine is racing that the bearings take a real pounding. the only way to know for definate is by taking the sump off and carfully inspecting the bearings... by the time you've got to it all and had a proper look you might as well do a re-build. I'd do the head and get saving for a new motor from a decent breakers.

I managed to crack the block and punch holes through the sump on a 200tdi landrover when the belt went at 70mph. I've never heard such a racket. Instantly knew it was a scrapper.

I'd be wary still of the big-ends. It's not a major job to change them and for the peace of mind, it might be worth it.

Mine went on starting, and I lost big-end #1 9000 miles later ... cost a second rebuild with crank regrind, and other bits a year after the first bill.
