JTD 16V temperatur

Hi guys,

I got a 2005 GT JTD and have the feeling something is strange with the engine temperature.

When driving in City traffic I do get the temperature to climb to 90° fairly easily, but when travelling long distance the temperature often sticks to 70° even when the outside temperature is above 35°. Last week I even had a shock moment when the temperature dropped from 70° to below 50° while driving down a loong mountain pass (and I already had driven non stop over 500km when it dropped).

Is that normal and healthy for the engine?

My thoughts are
a) thermostat
b) missing belly plate causing additional cooling
c) faulty temperature sensor
d) its normal afterall

Have you measured the temperature with some diagnose software? Cause the dashboard indicators are a bit off. During descending it's normal to lose temperature, barely any fuel is burnt.

I'd say almost certainly the thermostat is stuck in the open position, Alfisti. This would exactly explain all the symptoms you're experiencing. (And no, it's not normal, mine is pretty well planted dead on 90C at all times).

Thanks guys. It gets confusing when one reads sooo many posts were 70deg seems to be considered "normal", but dropping below 50 cannot be normal. I will get the thermostat changed.
