147 tensioner and idle belt!

Hi guys, I have taken my niosy 147 to a specialist and they suggested that i change the tensioner and idle belt to reduce the whizzing/spinning noise from the engine bay.

I have been quoted aprox 150....is this reasonable?

Also could this be done fairly easily by myself.... to save some pennies.

Any suggestions regarding price and where to get the parts!

Re: 147 tensioner and idle belt!

TS has three belts (cam. balance and aux), so I assume they are talking the AUXILIARY belt for that. This is the one you can see that drives the alternator and air-con.

Should be a DIY job, but one of the tensioners is a bit of a wotsit to get back on by all accounts (try a search or two on here and someone will have posted the method to do it).

Shop4Parts, EB Spares, Alternative Autos : all good outlets for parts and quick deliveries.

Your terminology suggests you might be better letting your specialist do the work.

Though if you do go the DIY route, The Alfaworkshop is another good source of Alfa Romeo Parts.

Haven't done it myself, but having read a few stories on here and other forums, the tensioner can be a bit of a wotsit due to the lack of space.

But I'll give it a go when the time comes .....

Re: 147 tensioner and idle belt!

First off just like to say hello to everyone!finally plucked up the courage to introduce myself.
I think I have the same problem Ben, I ordered the parts from Alfaworkshop after reading the good reports about them on the forum, parts arrived next day so I'm going to have a go myself this weekend, 51 including postage for belt and tensioner.
Got my 147 Alfa from GTA Italian car sales, anyone heard anything good or bad about them? I seem to have the common variator rattle and wishbone squeak which I foolishly didnt notice before buying but they gave me a 28day warranty for anything serious?
Great forum by the way!

Re: 147 tensioner and idle belt!

I would check to see if it is the power steering pump. This was causing a whining noise which increased with revs on my 147. You can check this yourself using a long screwdriver. Press the screwdriver end onto the pump and press your ear on the other end of the screwdriver and see what noise it makes when revving. I read somewhere that over tightining the aux belt can cause damage to the powersteering pump.

Re: 147 tensioner and idle belt!

The tensioner bearing is sprung loaded so I don't see how you could over tension it.

On a 156 there's a bit of plastic that comes off the wheel arch liner to gain access to the tensioner. If you haven't changed the belt before make a note/sketch of where it goes before you take it off. It'll only go on one way but it'll save you scratching your head whilst you work out how to put the new one back on. ...especially if the belt supplied turns out to be slightly to short (The specialist I got mine from gave me the wrong one! - packaging was damaged obscuring p/n).
