my engine (156) is very noisy, it squeaks (could be due to new cam belt and etc needed) and while driving if im just cruising along the car is silent, however if i put my foot down the engine sounds like tapping, i dont have to put it down hard but the noise is quite loud and irritating.
i have topped up the oil and this did nothing.
has anyone had this, i could get a sound recording if need be. thank you .
1) How old is the oil? It may be it is thin and needs changing.
2) It could be the variator, which is susceptible to old/low oil and once worn sounds like a diesel but usually only when the engine is cold.
If you think you need a new cambelt (every 36000 or 3 years now) I'd get it looked at sooner rather than later and get the variator changed at the same time.
When you topped up the oil, did you check the level first? Where was it in relation to the two small markers on the dipstick? Alfa engines don't like being run low on oil and you can cause irreparable damage buy running it low for too long.

Fugu: Looking back at your other posts, you haven't had the Alfa long have you? I'd have a strong word with the person you bought it off ... assuming it was a dealer ... private sales are usually "sold-as-seen".
what about mine which rattles/squeeks only when i start it up, and does it all the time, maybe a little bit less when its hot and then just disappears. no problem when driving or when stoped and rev it a little bit up.
