Cry Like A Baby Blown Engine Confirmed

Well spoke to the guys at Mangoletsi again this morning.
Worst possible confirmed - the engine has turned to mush inside.
(Blown a valve and possibly broken a con rod)
They are asking for £5532.18 to replace it, so a no go from a dealer. Cost more than the car is worth.

The question really is if any of you guys know where i may be able to source a new.. well second hand engine for reasonable money.

Grateful for any help

Cheers

PS - Also forgot to mention, its the 3.0L V6 24V (or was)

Re: Blown Engine Confirmed

well there was a nearly new GTA engine on PH a while ago for about £3k. On ebay I think you can pick up a recon fitted for under 2k. If it were me and I was intending to keep the car indefinitely, I'd try and find a GTA engine for it!

Re: Blown Engine Confirmed

They sometimes have spare engines etc at Allitalia in Wrexham (01978 757588), and I'm sure they wouldn't charge you that much to rebuild one either...

Re: Blown Engine Confirmed

Would the 3.0 V6 24v from a 164 fit?

Re: Blown Engine Confirmed

Alfas indeed.
Have a couple of options available now. There is a 2.0L V6 Turbo lump in the Pistonheads classifieds asking £1250 but will have to fit myself, also been contacted by a guy from Auto Lusso, who can collect the car and replace the engine for 2 grand all done with a service. Seems very reasonable to me considering what the dealer was asking.

Getting there I think

Re: Blown Engine Confirmed

Plenty of 2.5 lumps around - 166, 156 etc should be a straight swop. OK so down on power but get a squadra chip/runners for what you'll save over a 3l block.
Who would know except you?

Re: Blown Engine Confirmed

I'm pretty tempted to go for the 2.0L V6 turbo lump to be honest. It would turn my car into quite a rare beast.
Only downside I guess is that there is no guarantee its a serviceable unit, although apparently the car it was removed from was autodelta serviced and tuned to 250bhp... very tempting

Yes it looks like the same chap I bought the Koni's from - He bought it for a kitcar, it was a right hand drive conversion if I'm correct. I can't for the life of me think which kit car, I'll have to dig into some old posts...tempted me self but skint at the mo!

These 2 diagnoses are worlds apart from each other.
Can they not drop the sump off and tell you with a bit more certainty?

I'd be looking to fix an engine with a leaky valve.

Re: Blown Engine Confirmed

I think we all feel for you here......sometimes driving one of these lovely cars is like driving a ticking bomb....

Last time I was at Alfa Workshop in Royston, Jamie Porter had a v6 engine sitting on the workshop floor and I dont think it had a home....I would call him as he is bound to see these now and again.

When I had an Audi S4 the gearbox went and from Audi it would have cost £8,000 - managed to get a recon one for £1500......where there is hope, there is life! Keep the faith and am sure you will come up trumps. You see Alfa's being broken pretty regularly on ebay.

I would ring round Gonella Brothers, Alfa Workshop, Veloces etc.

Good luck.

Re: Blown Engine Confirmed

They drained the oil from the engine and found some nasty looking lumps of metal apparently. I don't think the dealer has the time or inclination to undertake work like that really - also dont want to spend the money if its ultimately unrepairable.
They seem to think a can rod is the main issue and the valve just an after effect, not sure but maybe the piston crown hit it.
It makes a horrendous noise even on slow turn over and no compression in one bore.
The underlying cause may have been when the oil cooler hose burst a few weeks back, it went unseen for a day or so and got pretty low on oil.
Towing the car home tonight so i'll start to have a little look myself, heads/sump off etc

Re: Blown Engine Confirmed

Personally I'd shop around for a replacement 3.0 rather than the turbo 2.0...Why not look on the list of recommended independents and phone a few up for a quote in fixing your current engine...

Re: Blown Engine Confirmed

www.breakeryard.com is your freind, sorted me out, also think twice about the turbo lump, you'll need all the extra wiring to go with it, turbo ecu and a key to match aswell, also people dont know anything about them and its hard to get people to work on them

Great fun though it must be said

Re: Blown Engine Confirmed

Please don,t hate me, I am too new, but, can you retrofit a reliable Toyota unit in there? I mean change everything but the looks of the car. I think it would be the most viable option long term!

Toyota?? ewwwww have a word
It would probably cost more to change as all mounts, shafts, ecu everything would be different.

Re: Blown Engine Confirmed

Bit wrist-slitting all this, very sorry. I'd stick with the 3l24v options if it were me. Better long term resale value, easier in all respects for future servicing. They're around but I wouldn't have a clue exactly how compatible 166 or 156 units are and would want to do some research. (Are 5 and 6 speed boxes interchangeable for instance?)

try and look on the bright side. At least the new engine won't need a service or a belt for a while
