Cry Like A Baby 147 diesel cam belt shredded

Help Cam belt failure,
I have an 147jtd16V 04year that has done 50K miles
I had all the service done at an Alfa dealer until it came out of warranty,6 weeks ago I had the 48k service done by a local garage.
The service book say 36k just check the timing belt and replace it at 72k.
Had smoke coming from under the bonnet as I tried to pull over the engine died with motor failure warning appearing on the dash.
Didn't hear any bad noises from the engine.
It wouldn't even turn over the key just turned.
RAC came out and showed me the cam belt had shredded but it was still attached to the pulleys but had been reduced in width by 70%.
A mate said he would look at it but warned me if there is any damage i'm looking at £1000+
Have I any come back from Alfa ?

Re: 147 diesel cam belt shredded

I have a 156 1.9 JTD 16V in my work shop that has snapped its belt at 60k, luckily the guy has a warranty. On the positive side on this engine they have rockers which appear to be sacrificial so there is no damage to the valves or pistons, so the damage is nothing like as bad as it could be.

I think you may well have a come back with Alfa, the worrying thing is we may well start to see more of this.

Not Happy Re: 147 diesel cam belt shredded

That sounds a a bit better, I have guy who is going to get it in his workshop Monday to get the head off to have a look, So I should have more of an idea then,
I might then phone the Alfa dealer to see what they say.
Thanks for your reply.

thought belts were revised to change at 36k/3 years now, instead of just check was an official update from alfa earlier this year if memory serves

Re: 147 diesel cam belt shredded

On the 1.9s there has been a spate of water pump seizures causing the belt to shred. Could this be the cause? Something must have been making the belt run very hot if it has shredded rather than shed teeth.

Moaning Re: 147 diesel cam belt shredded

I got the smell of burning rubber in the car , But thought it was from the car in front, Until it was too late.
Blue smoke started to come from under the front wheel arch then it just coasted to a stop.

Re: 147 diesel cam belt shredded

the 36k interval only applies to TS petrol engines. The JTD is still supposed to be 72k but id rather do it at 60k for safety, mine's on 54k now but I think i'll keep an eye on it and get it changed early.

I have a full 2yr warranty left anyway so I suppose I dont need to worry that much but it makes you think.

The audi 20v and v6 engines suffer from the exact same waterpump problem. You would notice a grumbly waterpump on a petrol but probably not on the jtd, even tho its quiet theres still too much "dieselly" noise to pick it out. Sounds like a cam bearing rumble on the petrol engine.

If you get any one other than a Alfa dealer to look at it first you wonít have claim against Alfa, if your service history is up to date it sounds to me as you have a good chance of succeeding with a claim and getting all the work done FOC.

Madness Re: 147 diesel cam belt shredded

I have already had a garage look at it,
Its was the waterpump that seized then shredded the belt,
I contacted Alfa last Friday they only phoned back today after I phoned them again.
I couldn't wait all week they are still getting head office to look at it,
I need the car for a 70 mile round trip every day.
The advice I have had is that it is reasonable to expect the water pump and Cam belt not to fail just out of warranty and 23K within the replacement time.
If they wont meet some of the cost I will take them to a small claims court, It's very easy I have done it before and won every time,
You can do it all on line.

Re: 147 diesel cam belt shredded

It's worth adding that the same engine is fitted to Saab's and Vauxhall's, and their cambelt service interval is 80,000 miles. Ask them to meet all the costs (given your low mileage, full service history, and young age of the car) before you go down the road of small claims - however they may stipulate that an authorised dealer should be doing the diagnosis & repair work...

I'm thinking "I hope no-one sees me driving the wife's car!"

Sometimes I think "maybe there'll be some sunny days next summer"!
