Timming Belt Snapped on 156 GTA

Hi All,

Have been a member of the forum for a few years, but haven't posted any thing yet, just done lots of reading !

I have a 2003 156 GTA Miro red, which I've owned since April 2004. I have to say I love the car & 3.5 yrs later you can still hear me saying to people 'I still smile every time I drive it'. You can't say that about many cars.

The car had been trouble free untill untill the begining of Sept this year, when the timming belt snapped. The car had only 32k miles on it. Needless to say I was on to Alfa (Fiat Ireland) to argue the toss. Anyway 4 wks later got the car back repaired. The bill was 5k & Alfa paid 4k, so was happy with that.

Moral of story 'change timming belt at 30k miles'. Book says 72k miles or after 5 yrs. Alfa have notified the dealers to ammend to 36k miles.

Does any one know where you can get GTA floor mats at a reasonable price. Last set cost me 225.00 & they are very hard wearing.

High Trailbraker, met you in the pub last friday, looking forward to seeing your car at the next track day.

Re: Timming Belt Snapped on 156 GTA

Howdy, was nice to bump into you the other day .
I probably still had my "just after trackday grin" on

Loads of threads on floormats, seems like you won't be able to get the exact GTA ones cheap, they are outrageously priced.

Very good quality other ones though, don't have the thread to hand, but some searching should see you right.

BTW Miro Red is stunning
If I had seen it before ordering my own car I would have been seriously tempted.

Cheers!

Re: Timming Belt Snapped on 156 GTA

Just this morning booked mine in for an 72k mile service (at 40k miles) seems I wasn't being over cautious. Lets hope the belt last another 2-300 miles.

I had mine done recently. The car has only got 27k km on the clock , 4 years old. The water pump has already a hairline crack when they took it out. Lucky I bought a GTV metal version to replace it. I think I can sleep well for another 3-4 years..

mine was done first at 60k and then ive just redone it at 111000. remember to replace all of the idlers aswell, and its defo worth considering the gtv 3.0 metal impellor pump as its all accessible.

As far as I know, Alfa revised the serviceing schedule for cambelts at 36k for t-sparks and JTS engines only. Not V6's.

Just out of interest, where does someone stand if there is a premature failure on a car?
Can you do a waranty claim?

Re: Timming Belt Snapped on 156 GTA

Just had my cam belt done at Jamie Porter's Workshop.

Car is coming up 5 years old, but only has 22500miles onthe clock, so had it done along with a full service (5000 miles since I bought it last December).

I feel a lot happier now as I was always worried about the old one going bang!

Cheers

I've also heard that Alfa are making contributions to V6 owners who get the belts done early? Is this true.

You were jolly lucky to get 4K from AR if you admitted to them ( ) that you used the car on a track............. AR UK & AR Turin read this forum every day.... I might add that AR have absolutely NO intention of changing their policy of a cam-belt change from 72,000 miles. Watch the AR UK website..

Just to clarify GTAed wasn't on track, at least that I know of, I was referring to bumping into him at a local pub later on in the day after I had done a trackday myself

Cheers,

Re: Timming Belt Snapped on 156 GTA

Thanks Guy's for all the reply's. Been away for a few days. Just to clarify the car has never done a track day. I can only imagine what it's like to do a track day in your GTA Trailbraker, I still get a great kick driving mine on the open roads (within the speed limits of course) !

Re: Timming Belt Snapped on 156 GTA

think my cam-belt went twang this evening! didnt hear any noises like pistons and cams self-destructing! what are the chances of this not being terminal? and if it is, what are the mechanical and finantial implications? is she gonna pull through? im gutted! i f#%kin luv that car! Any pointers you can give will be greatly appreciated! (the car has only done 50,000, well within alfa's recomended replacement at 72,000?) many thanks BRAD

Re: Timming Belt Snapped on 156 GTA

I think many people are recommending 36k for the GTA now instead of 72k because a lot of GTA belts have gone well before the 72k

Re: Timming Belt Snapped on 156 GTA

Brad - bad news mate, there will be bent valves. Don't try and restart the car whatever you do.

Get it taken to one of the engine rebuild specialists, AutoLusso have done loads of 3.2s so they would be my first port of call although they are quite a trek from you. They do have a tow truck though. I would give Ned a ring on 01582 869650, even if you end up not getting the work done with him he'll be happy to give advise.

I would avoid taking it to a main dealers as they will charge you for inspecting it before they quote you on the rebuild. Rebuild costs at main dealers are usually 3-4k anyway!
