It will run like a dream untill it snaps or a tensioner breaks..

Its every 72K miles, but 60K is a safer bet - but also, even if you have not done the miles - 3-4 years max between changes as the belt will in effect rot!

Hi and thankyou very much, i can now sleep ok tonite!! and i dont do that much mialaege , only around 20 a day ! at the moment anyway, thankyou again and so i shouldnt have to worry for at least another 2000 miles or would i be safe in waiting untill it gets to 65k interval as mine has done 130k now and the last belt was changed at 76k ? either way hopefully i be ok..

Thankyou again for your reply.

Re: Cambelt !! how often for Alfa 2.5 V6 1999

Sorry to rock the boat here, but 24valve V6 cam belt failures go up markedly from about 50,000 miles. On mine my personal change interval was 45,000 as there are very few fail before this time.

Its not even necessarily the belt, its the roller bearings that fail in the heat and grime and the tensioner for the same reason.

I know a guy here in Boston who bought a 156 V6 with 60,000 on it, and the cam belt broke on the drive home from buying it, though he assured me it was running perfectly up until that point.

I'm not saying that some do not make it to 72k..just that far too many do not get anything like that far. Good specialists like Jamie Porter have got the price down to such a level that its not worth taking the risk.

You want to budget about 500-700 quid to do a v6 belt change

If you have a look at some of the posts you will see the regular places to get parts from and no doubt some recommendations on indies to do it

Only you can decide when you want to do it but if like me when i 1st bought a v6,i wasn't willing to take the risk on every turn of the key

I can recommend Red Motori: http://www.redmotori.co.uk/21370/redmotori.htm

They are very good and it's a job that needs to be done by a specialist.

I'm happy enough with going to 60k as well, I personally think it's the time that's most important and that's got to be four years or less.

I got a quote of £350 from WAD in Wolverhampton for a cambelt for a V6. I bought mine with 84,000 on the clock and no proof of when it was last changed so gonna get it booked in as soon as payday comes.

let us know how you get on my v6 has done 60000 with no record of cam belt being done although i have taken off the cover and had a look and it seems ok (i am not sure it looks quite good in fact and the cover has been removed before!) i have heared a lot of people saying to get them done early- although i tend to stick to the book with services- i hope i am right if it does snap thats the engine finished!

Re: Cambelt !! how often for Alfa 2.5 V6 1999

Thought you may be interested in my very recent belt change

Done @ 52k and six year old with no previous,so when i got it back i had the chance to look at the previous belts, tensioner and water pump.

Firstly water pump was well past it,rubber seal on shaft was ready to give up,this was the original plastic impeller, get yourself a metal impellor if you dont already know, rollers were very well worn(both of them),tensioner was ok and the belts showed no cracking or wear(quite surprised really).

But this just shows you that horrific stories can be a result of any of the above components failing

Hope this info can be a guide to all v6 owners who are unsure what to do

Derek

Please, please do not leave it any longer. It is not as a rule the belt that snaps but something causes the belt to be "thrown" When mine went (FASH, pampered car, went at 69K) it was repaied by a main dealer. £3k later, car running perfectly. Hadn't done more than 200 miles and it went again. The dealer had not replaced the idler rollers, one had failed causing the belt to come off. As the dealer said, they learned a lesson and now replace everything as a matter of course. The longer it is left, the more chance of something failing. Once bitten as they say, 48K for me from now on.
