2.4 JTD Cam Belt change intervals

Hello all

A chap in my office has just scared the bejesus out of me by informing me that the belt on his 166 2.5 v6 needs changing every 36,000 miles (despite my understanding that they are due around 72k or five years).

Does anyone have any guidance on this for the diesel engines? Mine is an early 2.4 (the 136 bhp one) from 99 and last had the belt done as part of a five year service in Dec 05 at around 55k - it is now up to about 86k. Also, what sort of cost are we talking about?

Thanks

If I were you, I'd change it about Oct/Nov 2008, or 105k, whichever comes first, unless you are planning to get rid of the car anytime soon.

Re: 2.4 JTD Cam Belt change intervals

Hi
I looked into cam belt type stuff when I bought a high miler JTD (130K now) and it appears that the JTD does not suffer anywhere near as badly as petrol versions for cam belt failure. The 72k original milage quoted for replacement was changed to 36k for the petrol versions. The general feeling is that the diesel sholud be good for the 72k quoted, however through gut instinct and general nervousness I would suggest a 50k change as a good compromise, especially if you are not completely sure about how the car has been treated in the past.

Re: 2.4 JTD Cam Belt change intervals

Had mine done two weeks ago at 4 1/2 years old and 61,000 miles. No signs of anything untoward on old belt. Cost was 512, but there was 225 of parts inc 71 +vat for a thermostat which bumps it up a bit.

With the diesels the belt is a lot tougher. Its the rollers and the tensioner that that get dirt in the bearings and wear out. Thankfully failures before 72 are quite rare. Unlike on the petrol TSs.

V6 interval is still officially 72, but i'd say 45 after advice from my specialist. Above 50,000 the V6 cambelts reliability decreases markedly.
