Spider 2.0 twin spark top end rebuild

Hi all, my Spider has thrown a cam belt and I have to decide whether to scrap it or repair the engine. My mechanic reckons it wouldn't be too much of a job, valves replaced, head skimmed, new belt and pump kit etc.. however an Alfa head that I spoke to reckons that the crank shells will need sorting as they are prone to damage and if they're not done the new rebuild will end up failing again. Can anyone tell me more about this and what is the recommended work to be done particular to these engines?.. I'm not a mechanic myself so I hope I've relayed what I have heard correctly and it makes sense.

Many thanks for any advice given in reply, it would be a shame to scrap her, Nick.

P.S. It is a 98 Spider 2.0 twin spark.

The shells may need changing. They do take a whack when the belt goes and came get squished. Happened to us on our 156. Lasted a year after the belt change and then a big-end started to knock.

You can do the shells with just the sump off ...

You might not need the head skim but depending on how badly the vales are bent you may need some valve guides.

Did the belt go at speed/high revs, or like us, on the starter motor!

Thanks Gary it went at high revs.. I put my foot down and woah!.. An Alfa mechanic then turned up and kept trying to turn the engine over which I don't think would have improved things much either!..

Yup doe the shells too.

Skim head anyway. Easier than trying to clean it. Also raises the compression slightly.

It's alot of work really. Quicker to just dump in another 2.0l personally and use the spares out the dead engine or rebuild that one when you get chance and sell it on.
