Hmmm Recon engine or repair? - Italautos?

Cam belt in V6 156 snapped. Not yet sure of damage but looking to source a recon engine as I'm informed it's likely to have taken out between 10 & 24 valves and 2 heads are likely to be damaged.

I've found Italautos on ebay offering £1550 fitted. Is this a good price? Anyone else have any experience of using them?

Gutted for you mate, just had my belts done as was over the recomended 72,000 miles. There as rare as rocking horse sh**e but if you can get hold of one why not drop a 3.2 V6 in and cheer yourself up properly

Would love a 3.2 - would really put a grin on my face but can't really justify it in a 1999 car.
The 3.2 will have to be the next car on the shopping list!

Re: Recon engine or repair? - Italautos?

I read a review on another forum that said they were slightly unreliable for a few people, with one report that the engine was knocking from the word go.

£1550 seems quite cheap for the supply and fitment of a recon engine - I was told it would cost about £900 in parts to recon my 2.5 v6 so if you factor in the cost of the engine to start with and then the 20+ hours labour it does seem a bit on the cheap side.

If they are local why not take a trip down to see them before making a decision, because they are probably fairly genuine - after all everyone complains when it goes wrong but no one sings from the roof tops when its right.

I'm up that way on Sunday so will just get chance to look from the outside, but it'll point me in the right direction I'm sure.

Their website looks a bit poor, but I suppose I'm looking for someone good with motors not computers.

Re: Recon engine or repair? - Italautos?

I had someone asking about this firm today - I think he's on this forum asking about a 147 engine - my advice was basically to go see them and ask for some customer references and follow them up....a genuine firm shouldn't have a problem with this......

I'd agree that for a V6 the quoted price is pretty cheap for a full recon and fitting...to rebuild a Twin-spark costs at least £500.....

Thanks for the link - might directly try some of those who posted in that thread for opinions.

I don't think that the V6s are as likely to suffer from the bottom end issues that the TSparks can when the cambelt's gone. The only information that I can give you is that on our QV, the cambelt let go and head was rebuilt at around 85k. It's now done 165k and still runs beautifully. It did cost about 2500 to rebuild, but I reckon it was worth every penny.
