You'd be mad not to replace the cambelt and associated parts. At your mileage it should have been changed at least twice.
Use a recommended independent alfa garage, to avoid any excuses about tools etc.. (It's surely the garages problem and not yours, if they didn't have the correct tools they should not have told you it could be done!)
If your convinced you are being wripped off contact an alfa specialist and get a quote, 2 if possible. If they are a lot less than your £300, contact 'trading standards', you do have rights and they will be happy to help.. it's what there paid for!
