Help 147 Cambelt

Hi,
I am having some work done under warranty on my 2003 147 Lusso.
I bought it from a dealer a month ago with a limited 12 month Alfa warranty.
The car has got the dreaded Variator rattle and creaking suspension.
If they repair these faults I presume they will need to take off the cambelt to replace the variator so I think it would be a good time to replace this as well as the car has done 39000.
I don't think they would replace this on the warranty so I was thinking of asking them to fit a new belt on reassembly.
Bearing in mind they would be putting the belt back anyway how much do you think would be a reasonable price to pay?
Any advice appreciated

Re: 147 Cambelt

Hi Andeks

Providing it is a Twin Spark, Alfa recommend a cambelt change at 36,000 miles. This was reduced from 70,000 as the cambelts were lasting. So it is due for a cambelt change

They would defiantly change the belt if they are changing the variator so they should not be changing you anything.

I agree.
Alfa UK replaced my Variator and therefore Cambelt and Tensioners under warranty. The only caveat was that I had a full service history, and they wanted to see this.
Good luck with it!

This work (Cambelt etc) should have been done at 36,000 or three years (I think), and as an Alfa Dealer selling this car with an Alfa warranty they should be aware of this.

Find out the history, if it has one, and take it from there.

If it has been done before no need to do it again at YOUR expense.

If not, WHY not? "Car sold not not of mearchantable quality and unfit for purpose".

Go screw them Andy! They should not sell you a car at dealer prices that recently needed a cambelt doing

You could make the same argument for the susp. bushes. They should NOT have sold it with those faults.

If they wish to pursue a claim on their warranty package that is OK, but NO WAY should you pay for it.

Take the mechs. a crate of beer at Yuletide (or Christmas) and they will love you anyway!

Re: 147 Cambelt

Latest on the variator & cambelt is I took it to the dealer this morning and they have rung me up to tell me they will be replaced on the warranty.(worries over)
They said they couldn't hear the suspension creak so they will drive it further to check it out.
Wouldn't you just know it would hide itself now.
Probably due to the damp weather. I'll wait and see what they say tomorrow.
Thanks for the replies

Well Happy Re: 147 Cambelt

Picked my car up yesterday afternoon, cambelt and variator replaced- Happy days
The dealer told me they could not locate the creaking suspension so they have given all the joints a good "spraying" what with I don't know but I haven't heard anything untoward.
If I hear it again they will have another look.
Started the car this morning --- no rattle---heaven!!!
