147 JTD cambelt!!!

The mileage on the 147 is now over 68000 and I'm starting to get nervous about the cambelt. I've called a couple of local garages about getting it done and none of them want the job. the nearest alfa dealer quoted ridiculous money so now I'm thinking about doing it myself. I'm reasonably competent with older cars (removed engines for rebuilds and stuff like that) but I'm not confident with modern stuff. How hard is the job? does anyone know where I can get instructions for the job (I've looked for a haynes manual but cant find one!)

I would just get it done at the dealer, if they get it wrong, you can throw the car back at them!

Be a good lad Jamie and tell us where the **** you are so we can hopefully vector you onto a competent Alfa specialist who will not charge the earth. Maybe we can, maybe we can't, but sure as hell we will try as that cam belt needs doing pronto..and it should have a water pump as well if I have been reading things rightly about the four cylinder JTD

I'm close to Hinckley in Leicestershire, any good people around here? is it too much hassle to do myself?

If you can manage a trip to Royston, Herts, Jamie Porter at the Alfa Workshop will do you a good job for a modest fee. You'll likely get an Alfa courtesy car too and you can spend a morning at Cambridge or Duxford Air Museum or summat while you're in the area.

Re: 147 JTD cambelt!!!

A lot closer, but not quite so keen on price as Jamie Porter (though still a whole load less than a main dealer) is Intaservices in Leicester who repeatedly get good write ups from their customers on this forum and the AROC forum

Speak to Don Simpson on 0116 251 0899.

As to doing it yourself, well we can't judge your level of experience really, but its an expensive hit if you get the belt tension wrong on an Alfa. It can't be that difficult a job, but its one of those 'must be got right first time' jobs I leave to the experts these days.

Re: 147 JTD cambelt!!!

I had mine done at the Alfa dealer here in sheffield when I got the car, it wasn't too expensive and they changed the tensioners as well, ring some dealers and explain to them that all what you want. It pays to go in there and speak to them directly rather than over the phone - the service receptionist sometimes doesn't know what they are on about and may quote you far too high - haggle as well! I did and it payed off!

Hi

The figure of £400 (including variator) was mentioned to me by an Alfa specialist near Reading.

Regards

Re: 147 JTD cambelt!!!

Update: I now have three quotes:

£705.00: Alfa Romeo in Solihull
£342.67: Alfa Romeo in Derby
£284.91: Intaservices in Leicester.

What is the Variator?

You don't have one on a JTD. Intaservices are excellent. I'd trust then with my life!

Tell me about it! I think its pretty poor customer service for one dealer to be twice the price of another!

No, it makes a diesel sound perfectly well without one.

good one.

Make sure both quotes are for the same work.

Is one a 72,000 mile service, and the other just a cambelt & tensioners change??

Re: 147 JTD cambelt!!!

Just booked mine in for a cambelt and a thermostat on 20th Sept at BLS in Lincoln. Its just about to click over 60,000...and sitting in traffic for two hours getting out of the British Superbikes meeting at Cadwell Park on Monday proved beyond doubt it needs a stat..

The heater worked properly for the first time since we got the car

Re: 147 JTD cambelt!!!

For once we aren't getting ripped off in Ireland then, Cambelt, all tensioners, Aux belt and aux tensioner was £400 at my local Alfa dealers.

Not too bad a price tbh.

Re: 147 JTD cambelt!!!

Had the cambelt changed today at Intaservice, can't fault them at all, car ready on schedule, very polite, accurate quote and a very professional feel to the place. I would highly recommend them!
