Help Engine not starting, Help

Hi guys and gals,

Im a new member who is having a tech problem with my 156 16v 1.8 ts. Over the last week the car developed a problem that has gotten to where the car won't start. It began with having to turn the key 2-3 times to start. The yellow key stayed on for one second then went out but the fuel ignition nozzle stays on for 3-4 seconds with a whirring noise before going out. When this went out it started not any more.Ignition trying to start but not turning over ?? Help please.

Re: Engine not starting, Help

Please be clear.

When you state "its not turning over" this means the engine does not attempt to start (nothing happens).

Is this statement correct or do you mean "it turns over but does not fire up".

If its the first statement its the battery/ or starter/alternator is jammed, (hit with something (rod and hammer) to free it up).

If it is the second statement it is either the crank sensor or fuel pump is not arming properly.

Re: Engine not starting, Help

The crank sensor is at the bottom near your timing belt, it picks up a magnetic pickup from a pulley to know when number 1 piston is at tdc so knows the firing order.

Over time these get either gunked up or the resistance in the wire breaks down, first try to locate it and wipe it, alternatively buy a new crank sensor.

search for S4P817 £19.78

This is of course if the fuel pump is still arming when you turn the key (you hear a whirring sound from the rear).

If you cannot hear the fuel pump, first check fuses, if they are ok, then hotwire the fuel pump directly to test it.

Its more likely to be the crank sensor though.

Re: Engine not starting, Help

You didn't come across that way at all.
You are extremely helpful.
We have just got the timing belt changed so is it possible that
this could have interfered with that sensor.

Thanks a mil,
