Dodgy bearing on one of the belts in the engine bay?

I've recently noticed a horrible whining noise coming from my engine, (it's hard to describe, it's got a higher-pitched edge to it that what you'd call a whine!) It's getting annoyingly loud now!
Looking around in the engine bay it sounds like it's coming from somewhere in the region on just below the oil filler cap, so possibly one of the toothed-wheels behind the cambelt cover?

Is there anything here that's prone to wearing out?
About 6 months ago when I had the cambelt changed at Alfa Workshop I got the variator changed too, so I hope these can be counted out.

Why not pop it back to them and ask?

Sounds ominously like a tensioner, idler, stretcher, bearing of some sort. May not be of course, but get it checked out Ben.:

Might be the serpentine belt bearing tensioner, or power steering pump whining, other possibles chaps?:

The power steering pump is lower down is it not? The one (by the sounds of it) definitely seems to come from behind the cambelt cover.

Sounds like the one we had a problem with, whined first before rattling, but managed to get it sorted before anything worse occured. Was one of those bearings under the cover.:

how did you 'get it sorted'?

I'm going to AR tomorrow to get a couple of bits I need (lost all the screws/fixers for a wheelarch trim, so I'm paying something like 50p a screw!) so I may get a mechanic to have a listen to it. No doubt they'll try and charge me £60 to have a listen!

Have to admit, it went into the Alfa main dealer for it's fix: They started by saying on the job sheet investigate noise under cambelt cover. And ended up doing the belts, tensioners and idlers.: Hope yours is an easier fix after having the cambelt etc. sorted recently.:

Well I've had a look, and a good listen, and I'm really confident it's definitely from that area. Either the main shaft or the tensioner beneath it (on the left hand side in the pic). Surely this tensioner was replaced when my cambelt was, about 6 months ago??

Is the toothed tensioner white plastic? If so these were replaced by metal items well over a year ago.

Re: Dodgy bearing on one of the belts in the engine bay?

Thought I'd update this thread, it was one of the pullies on the aux belt, nothing worrying from the behind the cambelt cover! The garage found out by removing the aux belt, et voila, the noise stopped, thus narrowing it down to one of the aux belt pullies.

Thought that may be useful to anyone searching in the future with a similar problem!
