Cambelt failure analysis poll

I'd like to get some real life data about cambelt failures, maybe this will be of some use to someone, or maybe just genaral info.

I realise that this may be a little biased as those whose belts have never gone are unlikely to vote but one main reason for the poll is to find out if they do last longer until you start mucking around with them.

Re: Cambelt failure analysis poll

Had ours changed with tensioner and variator at 30 000 miles...although variator is occasionally noisy on cold start.
Luckily I found out about the revised 72 down to 36 k change interval and had it done early....

Re: Cambelt failure analysis poll

Had the works when, a tensioner started to rattle. Didn't realise it needed doing at three years, so was lucky, because she was three years old, just, when we bought her:.

Voted never gone, but had it changed at 40K/5years...origional looked perfect!!!

By some accounts the belt is not what goes first...is it a pulley or tensioner?

Re: Cambelt failure analysis poll

I did a similar poll to this a few months back. My theory on the result and looking back at old threads was that a lot failures occur to new owners of Alfas that don't know the score on the cam belt situation. They buy it, run it like an ordinary car and then come to grief. Next they join up on here to find out what they've done wrong and then often slag off Alfas to cover their embarrassment. So I reckon most people who have suffered are not on here any more.
Obviously none of us was helped by the alteration in the service interval but even then lots of the engines were making the old mileage figure.
My favourite tip to anyone is to get used to knowing the sound of your engine till you know it like your favourite tune. As soon as something sounds different find out why and do something about it.
Just my two pence worth

EDIT Just read ZF's post ,theres a man who listens to his engine!

Nope, original. Being a diesel, the interval is 72,000 with a "check" at 36,000.
