Engine trouble

After a cambelt failure I have had the top rebuilt. On first start up there was a ping ping ping sound going up and down with the rev´s. After a while it went away and since then I have had a problem with smoke. After taking the top of again I discovered that one of the sealings on top of the guide was damaged. Changed them all and put the engine back together. Pinging sound was back, but no smoke. Sound goes away again and the smoke is back.

Is there a chance that one of the guides (new) sits too high and causes the springs to hit the sealing???
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I can´t get to the car at the moment though cause I´m at work in the northsea...But need to fix as soon as I get home.

i guess you have not turned the engine over by hand (ratchet on crank pulley nut) with the rocker cover removed prior to starting the engine. you should do that to check for any contact before starting the enigne. now that you know which guide is causing the problem you can inspect it during use using this method. it sounds like the guide has not been pushed in fully. i would rip it out and check it is not damaged at the end, and check for any deposits or bits of crap where the end sits.
