new cam belt! how much?

V reg | 156 1999 | 2.0 TS

I just had the rac around for a flat battery and he asked me when I changed the cam belt, well being as I only just bought the car and it came with no service history he suggested it would be a good idea to change it asap.

I was wondering what osrt of cost I am looking at for a 1999 on a V plat 156 cam belt?

Would anyone here have an idea of the cost to put a new one on so I don't get conned by a garage.

Thanks for your time.

Kris

P.S. I am a computer person, there is no way on earth I could ever do this myself

Re: new cam belt! how much?

Lowest cost is about £300.....Take a look here for the cost from an Alfa specialist/independent garage.

All this should include Cam belt, cam belt tensioner, idler, balancer shaft belt, balancer shaft tensioner. (Consider also the variator if its noisy or has done more than 60,000 miles say.)

http://www.alfaworkshop.co.uk/alfa_r...ng_belts.shtml

A main dealer will be about £450-£490 I guess.

Recommendations for garages are here....

Re: new cam belt! how much?

I had mine done by a trusted local mechanic, I ordered original Alfa parts from Alfaworkshop and just got the garage to fit - total was 150 for labour and 120 approx for the bits.

I would also get the variator done if you can afford it (though didn't get mine done and now regret it) and highly recommend the Alfaworkshop if they aren't too far from you...

Re: new cam belt! how much?

Thank you very much for your replies

Unfortunately AlfaWorkshop is too far from me I am in cornwall

But I really just needed a price gauge so I knew I wasn't being over charged for the job itself.

I will endevour to knab a local mechanic to do the work for me, there is a couple near me

Again thank you for your help.

Re: new cam belt! how much?

dont know how the others do it but i just priced to do the job completly all belts tensioners variator and water pump (100,000) not worth skipping for the cost. including labour. 900 euro. thats not including service parts that i will do myself plugs 120 euro!!! oil and filters another 100 euro then i will start on the rattling suspension.
iv decided its worth it cos it goes and grips like no car iv ever driven plus it looks sooooooooo cool

Re: new cam belt! how much?

I just called my local Alfa Garage for a price and this is what they said.

All belts, tensioner, vat and labour £450 + they will give me a car to take for the day. I called again and they said £110 for the variator inl vat but only if I did it at the same time as the Cam belt change. So all in all £560 for cam belt and variator. It's quite a lot of money ot me so I just want to make sure this quote is reasonable.

Is this good?

Kris

P.S. the garage info is as follows.

G B ONGARO

UNIT D2 & D4 FORMAL BUSINESS PARK
GB - TRESWITHIAN CAMBORNE TR14 0PY
01209711336 / 01209711339

If this is an Alfa Dealership then that's not bad, my dealers quoted around the 650 mark inc variator...

Re: new cam belt! how much?

Well I have heard god things about the people that quoted me this so I am tempted to go ahead, my wife on the other hand wants me to stopspending money

So I might have to wait for a month before I can do this.

If you have no idea when the belts were last changed then I'd personally be vary nervous about using the car at all until there done.

Agree witht eh above, cambelt is not something to mess around with.
You're going to spend the money anyway, so I'd spend it sooner rather than later. If it goes in the next month while you're waiting, it'll cost a hell of a lot more.

BTW, very impressed at an RAC man giving that advice.

Re: new cam belt! how much?

£300 for all the belts plus £90 for the variator inc vat is what you should be paying. My local specialist agreed to match the same price that Alfa Workshop were charging.
