Help Engine hunting

Hello all, has anybody suffered fro their engine running rough at tickover, but runs fine everywhere else in the rev range? I've just got a 156 Sportwagen, 2.0TS and the only problem is this funny tickover. Its like an old diesel bus, they used to fire on all cylinders and then miss a turn. This engine will sit and tickover all day like this, so I suspect its not overfuelling. Responds ok on the road, so possibly not the MAF. Somebody mentioned that it could be a cam out of time, anybody had this problem before?
