Exotic materials, high compression and lots of revs.

Isn't that how to describe the workings of a turbo?

Re: Alfa 156 Touring car engine

I know of a road 155 which made 220bhp on the rollers, same engine so with enough money that sort of power can be had,

Re: Alfa 156 Touring car engine

You get to 275bhp by spending lots of €€€€
Revs are limited, so not that high for a race engine.

The old Supertouring 2.0 engines got up to 340bhp...
(they were limited to 8200rpm too)

FYI there are 2.0L flat-4 engines in 33s & Sprints running in the UK Alfa series with 260bhp. The gearbox soon becomes the very weak link in that chain though.

Re: Alfa 156 Touring car engine

The Ducati 999 WSB bikes from last year were making about 220 hp from a 999cc engine. The engines would cost around £25k a time and each one lasted for one meeting (or about 750kms). The were pushing everything to the limit to compete with the 4 cylinder bikes, even the crankcases were junked. A jap 1000cc 4 cylinder bike made a little more power but lasted all season!
Revs is the thing and to keep them in one piece they use titanium con rods and bolts (four bolts at £105 each and you can only use them twice then chuck them!!).

So what I'm saying is that if you chuck enough money at it you can get the power but with that power goes reduced engine life, sometimes vastly reduced!!

Re: Alfa 156 Touring car engine

Thats a completely different engine.

86x86, they have bored a 1.8 to 2.0 making it totally square.

The cams, induction and exhaust would be tuned for high revs, I doubt it would idle less than 2-3k...
