Engine Control Failure

Hi
I have a Alfa 147 GTA, just recently when I was driving to work the engine control light appeared. I also realised that the temperature had not gone to its usual 90d position and shortly after wards the "ice on road" apperead and this is Sydney, so no ice falls here.

The car drives fine however I also noted that BOTH the fans belts are running when I started it next.

I have booked in for a diagnostic at a Alfa Specialist but would anyone know the problem of by hand I know it can be a lot of things but is this common?
