156: Cambelt advice

My car is now 9 years old and has done only 40,000 miles and the cambelt was changed at 24,000 miles in March 2004.

Question is when should I do it again?

Re: 156: Cambelt advice

it needs to be changed every 36k or 3 years..whichever is sooner...yours will need to be changed now...dont forget to change the tensioners as well and if required water pump and or variator if its noisy..

Mmm....

I knew about the change every 36k, however I didn't realise it was based on time or mileage.

The first change wasn't carried out until the car was 6 years old.

Youre lucky then,When you read all the horror stories about cambelts on this forum, its just not worth the risk for the sake of a few hundred quids worth of repairs.

Yes, time to do it now based on age, assuming we're talking about a twinspark I would do the variator and water pump as well purely due to the age.

Yes, like a mut I trusted the service schedule, booked it in thinking I was 11000m ahead of schedule, and it went the next day...ouch! How naive. Should have known better. Took advice from AOF and changed tensioner, variator and water-pump.
