166 Engine warning light....

A yellow engine light has appeared on the 166. (could my week get much worse!?! ). It's a solid yellow light - doesn't flash.

The handbook says it's ok to drive, and to expect higher emissions, lower performance etc.

Anyone else had this major probs Easy to reset and/or fix

Cheers peeps

Re: 166 Engine warning light....

if you're car is 2001 onwards it's easy to reset if you have the appropriate scanner...look for a GS200 on ebay ('bout 20 quid) which worked a treat for me. If the light comes back on after about 30 miles or so then i'd put money on it being the MAF but let us know what fault codes are stored and we can advise further

Re: 166 Engine warning light....

Just picked her up from Alfatech
It was a fault from the lambda sensors. The fault has been cleared for now and we'll see if it reoccurs in the next few days.

Also had the headlight fitted too.

Re: 166 Engine warning light....

Hunter - let me know how you get on with AlfaTech. I've had both fantastic and awful experiences with them in the past.

For example, they didn't spot the dead MAF, lambda or perished intake hose when I asked them to check the car over when I bought it. They also fitted the wrong air filter. I then took it back to them for the MOT so that I could leave it with them to fix their own mistakes if it failed. It passed, they did a load of odd jobs for nothing, and got it back to me the same day.

If you're not happy with them, it's worth making the trek to Roger at PeakAlfa in Hope - he knows the 166 very very well and is a top bloke.
As for your MAF, I have an earlier engine than you (so a different warning light) but had similar problems. Car revved and went fine, but was quite thirsty. To give you an idea, when I got it it averaged 24 mpg. Now it's over 30.

156 2.4jtd working it's way towards perfect condition. Loving the diesel warpage!

Thanks Rich
Alfatech haven't let me down in the past. Decent guys, but I perhaps could understand if something gets overlooked....
Peak Alfa always have a daft waiting list in my experience. Very good, capable, but you have to be prepared to wait... :headbang:

Only time will tell on the MAF/Lambda debate...

Re: 166 Engine warning light....

Well if it's going to be the MAF I'd do it yourself: it'd only take a few minutes even for the uninitiated. So easy Peak Alfa didn't even charge me for it.

Hunter - interesting what you say about Peak and the waiting list. I've only been there once and booked it about a week in advance. Note that AlfaTech are servicing other cars because, according to Danny, there aren't enough Alfas about to keep them busy...

Re: 166 Engine warning light....

What is the original make of the MAF on the 166? Bosch? Has anyone posted anything about fitting it? I've seen a lot of posts concerning MAFs but nothing about fitment.

I think it is Bosch - mine was

For instructins how to put it apart see this bunch of pics (fitting is in reverse order) made by me while serviceing my Bella - http://el-barto.moj-album.com/album/6793830/ (click on pic then use control knobs left - right to scroll)

To remowe MAF you have to undo 3 M6 nuts on top cover of the air filter box and just pull it out.

Actual sensor looks like this (for mine V6 2.5 EURO3):
