Selespeed engine Oil?

Hi there,
bought my 156 from a car auction 1 owner full service history 32k (cambelt done, auctuator replaced etc) for a great price.

Done 13k in it and noticed that the engine oil is appearing low on on the dipstick. No lights are flashing on the console. As i'm away from home this week and will be on the M1 tomorrow morning figure it best to top up the oil so went to Halfords and got the recommended oil 15W-50.

My question is... I've added a little oil and it appears to have topped up a little. Should I top up to the correct levels? (i'm wondering if my console light is not working correctly)

Many thanks for any insights
Cheers
Mark

Re: Selespeed engine Oil?

mark welcome to AO

The warning light on the dash is a sign that the oil is far too low, once this comes on you may be already doing damage tothe engine and variator.

On the Twin Spark engine you need to top up to the MAX level on the dipstick and then check and if neccesary top up every week.

The recommended grade of oil is 10w40 or 10w60 for enthusiatic driving.

Re: Selespeed engine Oil?

Having the engine full of oil is better than not, regardless of the grade. If you're going to be doing long distances, get the oil filled up, and then when you can take it to a garage and get a full oil flush and filter change. Its good practice to change the oil and filter at the most every 10,000 miles or 6 months if your a start-stop driver.
