Do you think its engine oil? Not Selespeed oil, or gearbox oil, or brake fluid or anything?

i would be guessing if i said engine oil, it is not selespeed oil that is red an not so viscus as the oil on the floor.

If it smells a little like almonds, could be transmission oil, and if it is quite viscous,75/80/90, you should be able to tell it from the other lubricants? :

Re: engine is off but i can hear a pump noise

All I can say is if you can, try and stick your car up on jacks and have a look, see if you can see where the oil is coming from. That way you can at least try and diagnose where the oil is leaking from.

It might be something simple, I had a slight oil leak not so long ago, it was just a loose clip. Also, check your oil level with the dipstick to see if it is low, this may be a way to diagnose if it is engine oil that is leaking or not.

You may well need to get it towed to a garage, but if it is stuck in first gear does this mean the front wheels will not turn even when the car is off and pushed? Not sure about how the Selespeed clutch-less-ness works, ZF might be better at explaining it than me.

ok, but what is the pump noise- also i have just checked the selespeed oil thinking it might need a top up and it is full to the brim the last time i checked it it was half empty.

Re: engine is off but i can hear a pump noise

The Selespeed pump goes on when you open the drivers door. Whizzing sound for about 10 seconds or more. Do not over fill the Selespeed oil, it will be pumped out the breather tube on the bottle cap. If the oil is at the passanger side front wheel, it's the selespeed fluid.

Re: engine is off but i can hear a pump noise

thanks, but the noise was still going for half an hour thats why i disconnected the battery and also the selespeed oil was half full and is now full to the brim i think the selespeed fluid has backed up into the oil well. good to see another south african on the forum.

Re: engine is off but i can hear a pump noise

Not sure about the pump noise, I hear a pump noise from mine when I turn the key to the first mark and the electrics fire up. Might be a fuel pump or anything - I can't really help there, mines a manual diesel.

Hi didn't see you where from SA
Hope you get it sorted.
I stand to be corrected on this:
The SSpeed pump goes on until it get to the correct pressure. If there is not pressure I think it will stay on.
If you wait for DavidC or one of the others in the tech section they would help you out.
Good Luck
