156 2.0TS Rattly/noisy Engine (Top)

Hi Alfa nuts,

I wondered if anyone could shed some light......

I was driving my 2.0TS 156 (56k) today and started to hear a rattle from the engine. No warning lights, Power ok.

stopped and checked oil and water all ok. start engine and and rattly/knocking noise comes form the camshaft/top engine area, quickens as the engine is reved up.

Had the cambelt, tensioners, and variator replaced 20,000 miles ago allthough it was 3 years ago.

RAC bod removed the cambelt cover as far as he could (1 inch gap) cambelt was tight but he though one of the belts below was a bit slack.

I would appreciate any comments from the board on this one ????

Regards

Jules

Does it sound like a diesel on tickover? Then smooth out around 3000 rpm? Sounds like a knackered variator to me.

Re: 156 2.0TS Rattly/noisy Engine (Top)

Hi Thanks for the quick reply.

Too be honest I didnt rev it up and got it towed straight to my local garage. It definately sounds cammy (if you know what I mean)

Its seems a bit more knocky than the usual 'diesely' sound of the variator. I had the usual variator noise upon start up when I first had the car and got it changed with the cambelt at 36,000

Its only done 56k but ive only done 7k per year since - would a variator fail that quick ?

best regards

Jules

Sometimes they can go quickly.
I think you've done the right thing by getting it to a garrage though, best not to chance it

Re: 156 2.0TS Rattly/noisy Engine (Top)

If its knocking is could be piston slap or one of the bearings - do you know if the car has ever been run low on oil? My wife's Landrover made a knocking noise when it had a piston go...

if its from the top maybe one of the cams has jumped a tooth, or one or more of the lifters have gone hard

Hi ,
I have been pretty good with the oil and check it and top it up regurlarly.

Im intrigued as to why the noise would appear suddenly ?

I guess I will have to wait for a post mortem by the garage tomorrow ?

best regards

Re: 156 2.0TS Rattly/noisy Engine (Top)

Thought I would give an update....

Garage started car this morning and were shocked by the racket it made from the top end - thought the timing was seriously out. They were very busy so left it.

Started car again after dinner and guess what? - purring like a pussy cat !!! BUT very bad burning rubber/Plastic smell coming from around the cambelt cover area. They are going to take all the cover off in the morning and investigate further.

I has the cambelt, tensioners, Variator done 20k ago (New metal pulleys) but Im thinking it will all need doing again ?

Anybody else had this type of incident before ??

Thanks all.

Jules

Re: 156 2.0TS Rattly/noisy Engine (Top)

Update.

Turned out to be the balance shaft belts and tensioner with a knackered spring. - garage guy is confused as why it rattled so much though ??

Anybody any ideas !!

It is a great low mileage 56k engine with FSH and lots of lovely oil - Ive lost confidence in it now though.... can anyone reassure me before I turn to Volkswagen Golfs !!!!

regards

Hi Jules, your alfa's a talking point, your golf wont be.
You can get warranties on these cars for about 50 quid / year covering you for, i believe, three 500 quid garage bills a year. So I'm afraid there goes your excuse for getting rid!! Any car with a bit of panache has the potential to sting you, just part of the fun. Also, don't be panicked by mechanics who'd rather be working on ladas.

You mention a warranty for £50 a year, could you direct me(and I suspect many others) to this company please? I did a little research earlier this year and they were nearer £200....

Probably the tensioner that was making the rattling sound, but as this was the balancer belt, then the engine would have been unbalanced as well which can't have helped.

Hi guys, my warranty is from the AA and is 58 quid for the year. Haven't claimed on this myself so would be interested in any other's experiences. They do require to see you last service invoice for a claim and , of course, terms and conditions apply.

Re: 156 2.0TS Rattly/noisy Engine (Top)

Hi Again Guys !!!

[email protected]@Dy Alfa !!

Guess what drove about 200 miles on my new repair (Balance belt and tensioner) when suddenly lost power and smoke from exhaust !!

Stopped pulled over lifted bonnet and sounded like puffing billy !!
No1 Coil pack fly lead to 10mm plug was comletely melted and the 10mm NGK had blown the middle of the plug clean out (lucky for me threads still intact)

Got RAC out and popped to the local factors and put in a new Plug and he gave me a temporary fly lead between coil pack and 10mm plug - got me home lovely ....

Now... has anyone else had this problem. Im thinking along the lines of the previous mechanic when he changed the tensioner and belt removed No1 plug to carry Out TDC and he dislodged the 10mm plug HT lead and It had been merrily arching away for a few hundred miles...

what do you all think ? do the plugs sometime fail. the car has done 57k and is due the plugs ???

Oh and by the way it melted the camshaft cover - but good old ebay came to the rescue. Coil pack £25, Cover £15.00 and £12 quid for a new NGK - feel quite lucky really....!

Nice ! - Im really regretting selling my Fully restored Alfasud sprint now. It was great. Bare metal respray, waxoiled. Rebuilt engine. great handling. The flat four engine is the best engine alfa have ever designed .....Oh I remember the sound of the boxer through the stainless steel twin pipe...True alfa rasp !!

All the best
