147 JTD 16v M-Jet Cam Belt Intervals

Just dropped the car off at the Alfa garage for some warranty work on the suspension and this morning they tell me I'm due for a cam belt change. I've been told Alfa have dropped the service interval from 72k down to 36k. Now I thought this was for the 4-cylinder petrol engines, not the diesels - they say 72k but best to get it done around 60k.

I bought the car a couple of months ago after the garage checked with Alfa and came back saying 72k, it's got 45k on the clock so I thought I'd be in for a couple of years of solid motoring before the cam belt needs doing. Are the Alfa dealership trying to buy a bit of business off me since I've had so much warranty work done now it must be costing them money?

Over to you guys? What is the official line on changing belts on the 1.9JTD 16v M-jet engines?

72 K is still the recommended as far as I know.

I am going to do mine at 60K to be safe.

36K was for the 4 pot TS & JTS engines

yep agreed, 72k or 4 years is the recommended interval still on the diesels, clever owners go for 60k or 3 and a bit years though.

Nice one, cheers guys.

I thought the garage were trying to buy extra business off me I don't really need.

What year is the car ? 2003 cars now are up for changes so despite the mileage it could still be due a change ? If it's 2003 or older then it is due a change based on years, not miles.

It was registered in July 2004 so another year to go and I'll get it sorted then. Just had it confirmed by Alfa UK on their helpline it's 72k for diesels and 36k for petrol models. The garage were indeed trying to con me out of extra business.

Cheers for the quick replies guys!

Eric Ashmole in Swansea.

I'd never touch them if it was my money, I only have to go through them because it's warranty work but they are staffed by chimps. I'm wiriting a sh*tty letter to the garage manager, their service manager and the Alfa franchise people to complain about their service standards and the amount of time I've had to come back to get stuff fixed that should have been sorted. Really not happy with them.

Going to look at a 147 mjet this evening... done about 60K and serviced at about 58K. So reading this I guess I have to hope the cam belt was changed at the last service, (though I doubt it was), or I'll have to have it done immediatedly. Fingers crossed I've found my future 147! :-)
