Re: chain rattle sound in engine

There aren't any chains (cam belt), so something is loose like a exhaust heat shield or possibly you have a tensioner on the way out in which case you ned to get it checked out quickly.

Unlikely to be the variator as this make more of "diesel engine" sound and normally only when cold.

Don't wanna panic anyone but thats a good description of what a mistimed engine sounds like as well. By mistimed I mean one thats had a cambelt change without camlocks being used, tippex marks instead.....

Pretty sure its the bracket holding the heat shield to the exhaust manifold... just crawl under the car and see if its cracked apart.

Re: chain rattle sound in engine

I have the same sound with my car and I have searched this forum and found that it is exhaust bracket. I didn't have the time to go to the service but I will soon. I will post what they found. As I am not very sure what this bracket is if someone has instructions where to look it would be useful because we have a very bad service here in Montenegro. I usually find the solution for the problem here and give them the instructions how to fix it.

Hi! MvA, Could be the heat shield, or as was the case with our 2001 Sele' 147, the stretchers,(tensioners) idler gears. New fitted, plus belts, noise gone.:

Re: chain rattle sound in engine

from under the car ,look up the front of the engine, there is a bracket bolted to the engine with 2 x 13mm bolts.the bracket snaps next to the bolts bolted to the engine.the new brackets [come in 2 parts] are modified, and in stead of being at right angle,it dips and has a rounded corner.

Re: chain rattle sound in engine

It could be the cat breaking up,but i would get that cambelt checked out first,it's cheaper to replace than to repair, keep us informed.

Re: chain rattle sound in engine

I went to the service, and they didn't find this bracket at all.
I replaced all belts and tensioners and the sound is still here. If someone has a picture or part number for this exhaust bracket that I can give to the people in service, please send it.
