Cambelt On 2.5 V6

Hi Everyone,

I am now the very proud owner of a (2000) 156 2.5 V6. Lovely car, just a few little questions on the cambelt.

The car has done 66,000 miles, got good service history, but no record of a cambelt change. I do intend to get this done ASAP, but I will buy the parts, and get my mechanic to fit them for me.

What parts do you generally replace when you change the cambelt - obviously the cambelt and water pump. But how many tensioners does the belt have and what's this balancer belt all about?! Any other bits I need to replace aswell?

Any advice greatly appreciated - this is my first V6 Alfa so please forgive my ignorance, I'm still learning!

Cheers Guys,
Tony.

Balance belt is only for the 2.0TS/JTS

Whoever does the job will need the correct camlock tools for the engine.
The job can't be done without them.

Make sure you get the metal impeller pump from the 3.0V6 GTV too.

Re: Cambelt On 2.5 V6

My quite serious advice is NOT to drive the car at all if it has covered 66,000 with no belt change. I can introduce you to a 156 2.5 owner who bought a perfect car at this mileage only to have the belt fail 14 miles into his journey home..Its that critical I'm afraid and you are on a tight rope.

Apart from belt and pump there is the belt tensioner and the rollers..which are pricey. The only other belt is the serpentine belt that does water pump, aircon, power steering. This should also be replaced. The bits do come to quite a lump of cash, but there is only one way to do this job and that is properly.

Also check engine mounts while you are about it.
Good luck..I took one look and wielded my chequebook instead

Re: Cambelt On 2.5 V6

To do the job properly you will need:-

Cambelt
Tensioner
2x idlers
Water pump from 3.0 24v GTV (has metal impeller)
2 water pump gaskets
6x spark plugs (makes sense while the engine is stripped)
Front and back rocker gaskets
Auxiliary belt

Your mechanic will need cam locks and a tensioer adjusting tool.

Re: Cambelt On 2.5 V6

Thanks for your help guys. How much am I looking at for as a labour charge - I can get all of the above bits (except for the auxillary belt and rocker cover gakets) for £271 including the VAT.

Would it be necessary to replace the tensioners on the aux belt - also, how many are there?

Re: Cambelt On 2.5 V6

Including the water pump there is several hours work there. I would imagine labour charges to be in the region of £370 including Vat.

It is not necessary to replace the 2 idlers and 1 tensioner for the auxiliary belt. (unless they are nacked of course)

It's a shame you aren't closer to me. I'd do it for £250.
