Help Cam Belt gone-Do i need bottom end rebuild?

Hi.the cam belt has gone on my 156 2.5 v6.Should i fit new big end shells? I did have a couple of replies to an earlier post as regards to the twin spark engine but does anyone know if the v6 suffers like the twin spark following a cam belt breakage. Thanks in advance

You could as a precaution but it is not necessary. The V6 doesn't suffer as much as the 4 pot after a cambelt failure. I have repaired quite a few V6's after a camblet failure and not had to do any work to the bottom end on any of them.

the alfa V6 lumps dont normally suffer with big end bearings but i have seen the thrust bearing fail afew times! if it was mine i would probably just repair the heads

Hi,thanks for the replies. Why does the twin spark seem to need the shells replacing and the v6 not? Any ideas?

As someone who has a V6 with 70k miles on it after a head rebuild, I'd have to say, don't bother.

I guess i won't bother then.My mechanic replaced the belt and tensioners only a matter of hours earlier as a precautionary measure against cambelt failure Nevermind and all that.Cheers for the replies though.

was the work done properly then? Seems odd that the belt and/or tensioner would fail so soon after fitting unless something was not quite right...

Re: Cam Belt gone-Do i need bottom end rebuild?

Hello niall. No the the job wasn't done properly as his public liability insurance is now paying for two new heads.I got all new gear from jamie porter at alfa workshop, which included cam belt, idlers, tensioners, aux belt, tensioner, water pump etc etc,and got my mechanic to fit them.I have just asked my mechanic this evening what exactly happened to the new belt and he said it 'came off but didn't strip any teeth',seems to me as a layman that he didn't tension the belt properly and it went slack.I only had the car three weeks and it's been in bits in his workshop ever since (4 weeks and counting!)

He's probably not got the proper tensioning tool. Either that or he doesn't know what he's doing.

The latter me thinks! If i had known of blue bell motors at aycliffe i would have taken it there.I entrusted the work to a local mechanic because i didn't feel confident enough to take it to newcastle as it was a bit far due to a failing water pump. You live and learn.
