Re: cam belt hmm

MrX, sorry but you are crazy!
A mechanic has told you that the cambelt/tensioner has failed and yet you are still trying to start the engine.

You have probably eliminated the slim hope that your engine had survived the initial failure.

Leave it alone and get it seen to by someone that knows what they are doing.

Re: cam belt hmm

If the belt doesn't turn when everything else does then the teeth are stripped.

Once the valves have been clipped the damage has been done - turning the engine over wont do any more damage - waste of time though.

Paul.

Re: cam belt hmm

Listen dude.......... My belt went 2 months ago, it stripped the teeth on the crank end....... the belt looked fine from above, but wouldn't move when the engine turned over........ I agree with PaulR, the damage is done (especially if you'ved tried and tried it !!!!)...... I was full of eternal optimism when it happened to me, I was just going to buy a new belt and try it just to see if I had got away without bending any valves....... BUT now being intimate with the engine geometry I now know it was a foolish hope........... I lost 10 out of the 16 valves on my 1.8 T-Spark......... You had better face up to the pianfull reality, you've lost some or all of your valves. You clearly are not a "mechanically minded person" so repairing it yourself is out, therefore you just need to get some prices from garages to do the repair for you......... bank on about £1000 -£1500 for a non-dealer repair (more for a main dealer), just for comparrison it cost me just under £400 for a self repair including the tooling........... SORRY DUDE but that's the painfull truth about owning an Alfa..............

Your not talking about the auxillary belt are you? You can't see the cam belt without removing the cover.

Re: cam belt hmm

mrxchef , talk to "kabane" on the alfa156.net forums - he does engine rebuilds/replacements at very good prices, and i can highly reccommend his work, think he charges less than 1k for a reconned engine which might be your best option
