Piston liner ring seal question

Hi all

if i was to replace the Piston liner ring seal i see people saying how they would do it.

But i want to know why is it not possible to just pull the liner off the piston and slide the o ring over the piston as i guess it would be the same size as the liner thus bigger then the piston and put it in place, Then replace the liner .

I know doing it that way i wont be able to use a ring compressor but ive replaced pistons before without using one. but as this is a 1st time for me working on a alfa is it alot harder to compress the rings by hand to slip back in the liners.

thanks in advance

how are you going to compress the rings, even without a ring compressor, if the piston's still in the bore??
plus some other things that spring to mind..

issue i can see is fitting rings into a bore without piston ring clamp is do able if from the top trying to get a liner over the piston not being able to see the rings or have much access will be more trouble than its worth in my opinion

I've done it with the engine in car before - I removed the sump so that I could split the connecting rods and remove the piston.
