Turning over fine, but not firing

Hi,
got the 16v 1.9JTDM engine, and on a few occasions it has failed to start.
The engine turns over fine, but nothing else happens (doesn't even stutter).
Play around a bit, key in/ out etc, and after a while it eventually starts as if nothing has happened.
This has happened both warm and cold.
There are no warning lights as such (had a service after the first time it happened, apparently no fault codes).
Reading up a bit, seems this is related to the crankshaft sensor, though one thread pointed towards the fuel pressure regulator.
These the right places to be looking?
cheers

Crankshaft sensor is favorite and an inexpensive job.

taken a twist, recieved an OBD sensor in the post today, just as it decides it definitely was not going to start at all.
Plugged in and using muliecuscan, found there was no fuel pressure. The demand was for 270bar, and was getting maybe 10 bar (on crank).
Got some advice to try to activate the fuel pump relay, did this a couple of times (there was traffic passing so could not hear it), anyway, that got it to fire.
Noticed that the fuel filter had not been changed any time lately, so had that done, but nothing else really sticking out, no fault codes registered either....

any ideas for next step?
