questions about estate and which engine? or do i buy a Jag X type

Hi all , in the market for a new car (new to me) and i am looking at an estate this time and have a few questions re -engines.
Been checking out diesels but which of the two is the better engine? also not adverse to a 2.2 petrol as they seem to go cheap used but am concerned about talk on here about lag ,don't want to buy a car that feels as though there is an engine fault ,is it that bad?
Other option is a Jag X type diesel as they seem to have good fuel economy but i suppose that's a discussion for another forum

Cheers

Well if you want a Mondeo ... get an X-type ... that's what's underneath the pretty bodywork

What Alfa are you looking at? the 159 or older 156?

The X types are cracking cars. Yes based on the Mondeo but a whole lot more car. Make sure the flywheel has been changed as there a problem point. 2.2 diesels are much better.

The 159 is based on the fiat/gm premium platform only used by Alfa

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM/Fiat_Premium_platform

The x-type shares very few parts of the whole with the mondeo, it only uses part of the mondeo chassis.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaguar_X-Type#Technical

Old stereotypes stick eh?

OP, the x-type aint a bad car, the 2.2 diseasel is comparatively underpowered on paper but in reality feels a very nice car to drive, it doesn't have the sharp sensitive feel of an alfa but in a lot of ways thats not a bad thing, they can be had with great specs for very little money.

Drive one and then make your mind up.

A bloke at work has just sold an 08 plate 2.2 Diesel X type, not a bad looking car but he had loads of problems with it.

It was also pretty slow, my 1.7 Ford Puma managed to outrun it fairly easily on a dual carriageway despite supposedly having less power.

I think if you were careful and got one at a good price it would be ok though.

Your Puma would have a better power-to-weight ratio and prob lower geared.

I repair Jags for a living 2.2 auto bit slower than manual but no gearbox clutch problems. The petrols whilst not as economical are four wheel drive and for us more reliable and in the snow/wet run rings around the diesels. But I love Alfas and for me it would be the 159 SW such a great looking car both are lifestyle estates I could not say how reliable the Alfas are but we do have a lot of 2.2s with 200K plus milage on them so yoy pays your money....................

Had a 2.5v6 last year. Lovely and confortable but rather expensive to run. The diesels are prety much reliable as they are the ford engines. They have he same issues as alfa and other marque diesels.
DPF, DMF, VNT etc.

I agree but the trouble is with the diesels we did 4 injectors last week at 81K they could run a petrol car a year for the cost of that one repair. Its not uncommon so you should factor these repairs into diesel running costs. My daughter has my X type its a 2.5 on LPG runs well and is cheaper to run than a diesel plus its all wheel drive she says its awesome in the wet.

Thanks for your input guys ,sorry for late reply ,considering a cheap Alfa Estate for work and a 3.0 litre x-type or maybe even an xj8 as a weekend car ,at my age they don't cost an arm and a leg to insure even with my points

You cant compare a Jag to an Alfa, although i would love to own a Jag as well so i can experience that British feel.

A Jag is a British design car, it has that English classic workmanship behind it. They are very quite cars for crusing long distances.

An Alfa has a racing heritage behind it, Italian leather. It has more responsive steering and sometimes depending on what model they can be noisy HWY and bumpy city streets.

They are both amazing cars, you must make a choice.
