12V V6 engine recommisioning

Hi Guys,
Any advice on recommisioning my V6...removed from a crashed 75 it has been standing for a while, but I hope to have manifolds fabricated shortly and then we can complete the installation in my project!

The loom was damaged on removal, so I have spares from a 164 cloverleaf. Assuming I do the obvious and renew cambelt and water pump, what else should I do?

I suppose I am asking two questions...

How much is involved in changing from Jetronic to Motronic EFI?

What do I need to do to ensure minimum fuss on starting up?

Change oil obviously. I would pull the cam covers and cover the cams in oil while doing the belts. Turn over for a while with the plugs out to get oil pressure. Bleed the injectors (my 3.2 took ages to clear the air out of the pipes). No idea on changing the brains, but if you change everything (including sensors) you should be OK.

Appreciated.....I suspect I'll need to swap the injectors over with the ECU. Any one know if the distributors are compatible?

Don't know the Jetronic setup at all, but the Motronic dizzy is a purely mechanical device for pointing the spark at the right plug. No sensors/electronics in it at all, no advance mechanism, so should be easy to replicate with any other dizzy.

The belt detensioner is probably leaking or will leak....tough call on that one as parts are hard to find.

Be very critical when you inspect the cam lobes. Particularly the exhaust lobes and followers. Inlets usually all good.

Injectors may want servicing, whichever ones you use. Perhaps try your luck first.

I'd be tempted to wind up the oil pressure while you have the belt off - spin the aux pulley with an electric drill and suitable adapter. It is safe to do this with the cam covers off and you can see the oil flowing out of the cam bearing caps etc.

Rear crank main oil seals leak too - might be worth replacing that while you have it accessible.

Valve stem seals maybe?

Dunno really, depends how good the motor was before it crashed and how much you want to spend.

Last thing while you have the cam covers off, and this is important - re-torque the cylinder head bolts. I used to go to about +10% on spec, oiled threads and washers.

Good luck.

If it crashed then to paraphrase my mechanic "It was running alright before it hit the tree...."

Just lube it up first (get some oil pressure primed) and then just fire her up.
