ELM327 on Windows 8

I'm trying to get MultiECUScan working on my new laptop. Its windows 8 and I can't figure out how to get the OBD interface usb cable to work...

I believe its an ELM327 cable, but I have an OBDII cable too (same problem).

In my device manager, its listed as a "USB Serial Port" and I can change the Com port number (I have it on 4 just now) and play with the speed settings etc, but MultiECUScan simply can't find the cable.

Do I need a different driver, or is 'USB Serial Port' the correct thing?

Has anyone successfully used windows 8 to communicate with a 159 1.9JTDm?

It works on mine. Set your cable to COM port 1 and MES (FES) should recognise it no problem...

I presume you have installed the required .NET Framework 3.5? Your best source of information would be the MultiECUScan forum.

A bit patronising! All I have is a cable and a mini CD with drivers for old windows operating systems, so I didn't know of any operating-specific pre-requisites!

Windows 8 was happy to install its own driver without that framework. Perhaps its already on the laptop, I'll check later thanks.

So is that all I need to know, or is there other black magic that isn't in the 5 year old 'single page, translated directly from Chinese' manual?

I guess I'm used to modern USB devices that just plug and play! I've managed to forget the black art of setting up modems etc.

It appears that my laptop has the required .NET Framework 3.5 installed already. I did't have any problem running the multiECUscan software in the first place, its just that my new Windows8 laptop can't find the interface, yet it works perfectly on WindowsXP with exactly the same driver name and settings.

I have posted a question in the forum you recommended, lets see if anyone can help...

Have you actually used the FTDI drivers from Virtual COM Port Drivers.
Windows installs drivers that sometimes dont work correctly.
