Water Pump "Chatter"

I replaced the thermostat on my GTV twin spark yesterday. Once I had got the hoses off after a bit of farting around the job was easy.

Now when I start the engine (hot or cold) there is a very brief sort of "chatter" noise - I assume from the water pump. This wasn't happening before I did the thermo.

Why?

From what I understand the system is self bleeding. Shouldn't this sort out any air stuck in the system? Perhaps I need to give it more time.

I ran the car around after I had finished on Saturday - it needed a small amount of water. Yesterday after an 80 mile round trip it needed a bit more.

it's largely self belleding, but it doesn't hurt to help it a bit... I usually run the engine on high idle until the fans kick in, meanwhile keeping an eye on the coolant level so the pump never sucks air in.

By the time the fans kick in you can be sure the rad is full aswell. Make sure A/C is turned off though, and the heater inside the car is turned to hot. Im unsure if the GTV uses the 155/146 style water tap for the heater or the 156 style cold/hot air mixing flap.

Thanks for the advice, It seems to have sorted itself - no noise when starting this evening.

The new stat is working well, temp gets up to 90 then drops back a bit.
