Boxer 1.7 16v help !!

Drove it for the first time and i noticed its not as free revving as I remember boxers to be?

Changed oil and filter, after a flush! Changed spark plugs and took it out again but to be honest I'm wondering if one of the timing belts has been put on a tooth out?
It idles sweetly, but struggles to rev very quickly.
Any ideas very welcome....also just developed a new problem, the revs don't drop when I take my foot off the gas. From 4k revs it can take as long as 4 seconds for the revs to drop to idle.
Any idea ??

Regards

Paul

Does it have a MAF?
I always seem to say look at the MAF..... but it's always worked for me as the first thing to eliminate from the suspects list.
My sisters old Astra had the same problem (OK, entirely different engine but the revs took a long time to drop etc) and it turned out it was the MAF.

I expect it will depend which boxer you had before.
In 1987 I went from a 1350 Sud to a 1490 Sud and the difference between even those two was noticeable.
