1.3 Satan's mini-me.. :D

Does anyone knoe if the 1.3 FPT Diesel donkey as used in the last shape of Vauxhall Corsa is related to the one in the Alfa MiTo etc.?

Does the beast have gear-driven cams?

What generally goes wrong with them?

A friend of mine has one (Corsa.. ) and it's a first step towards getting him back into the Alfa fold (he had a Series 2 "Gold Cloverleaf" 33 many moons ago.. )

The exhaust cam is driven from the crank by a toothed cam belt, the cam belt also drives the water pump and high pressure fuel pump. The inlet cam is driven by a gear off the exhaust cam.

They are sturdy little engines, no real issues other than generic diesels issues such as EGR valves & inlet manifolds sooting up etc.

Ah.. that might explain it. The lad was told it had gear driven cams.. which would be kind of exotic!

What's the cam-belt change interval?

They are quite a new engine, so we don't really know what long term reliability for things like cam-belts. Its basically the same design as the 1.9 but smaller so if it were me I'd start with the old 6 years / 72k official interval but keeping a careful eye out on forums for things like waterpump failure etc, and do it sooner if things start going wrong. Officially its probably 90k like the newer JTD engines but IMO this is way too long, we keep seeing them break at less than that.
