2.0 TS recon/tune?

Hi Guys,

I'm after your advice, I kept my wrecked GTV when it was cat C written off. It has a good cf2 2.0 ts motor in it as a spare for my replacement GTV.

What I'd like to know is what I can do to it, leave it and just swap it if and when I need it? Or have it reconditioned as standard? Or what really temps me is have it reconditioned and tuned? What can be done and how scary are the cost?

Thanks for your opinions

Mark

Some food for thought (prices without labour)

Fast road cams - £400-800
Lightweight flywheel - £60-200
Lightweight crank pulley - £70
Head Porting - £250
Remap - £350

Its not hard to get a TS to match a 2.5v6 or better.

Youll have to get the head taken off for cams etc which means you may aswell get the engine rebuilt with new headgasket, cambelt etc especially if the engines been sitting there for a while.

Thanks laptop matt I was just after some ideas of what I could do or have done to the engine... I don't have a clue about engine tuning. I'm just thinking while I have the engine sitting there and don't need it right now i could mybe have something done to it to make it better...

pardon me gents, but i am skeptical...

we here in melbourne vic australia have dyno'd many a modern alfa...

the common thread is that the 2.0TS as fitted to the typo 932 and 916 cars struggle in reality to put down around 100hp at the wheels.

the v6s significantly better this figure.

dyno day results from a meet in 2010 FYI: (figures ATW)

HP Nm Model
66.5 108.6 33 1.5Ti
72.5 97.0 33 1.5Ti

262.4 337.0 BMW 330 Convertible
298.5 362.5 Porsche 997
393.0 418.4 BMW M5

- unfort no 932 2.5s on the day, plan to get mine done soon to have a figure, but working out on the 3.0 and working back with quoted HP at the crank, we can assume at least 150hp from the 2.5... (based on 220hp vs 192hp quoted) again, unconfirmed down here...

needless to say, a 40-50hp increase over the TS is a fairly big deal...

even to get neat the 2.5, the TS would need some pretty lumpy cams and some decent head work... remap..even then, colour me skeptical...

i say budget rebuild and swap is good enough... wasting yoru time and money with the TS, it's just not a great engine to begin with... jmho...

Some good results there.

Although you could always say dont bother with a V6 and buy a V8. He only has a TS available and wants the most from it. I woulnt say its not a great engine it just needs alot of TLC to make it reliable.

Ive tuned a TS as I love the lightness and the selespeed system. Operation Alfa on here got 186 bhp from his TS doing the same as me which is nearly the same as a 2.5 with a 100kg lighter front end.

yeah but a v6 916 gtv is freely available, alfa din't make a v8 gtv unfort

the v6 is solid out of the box and has nice features like all alloy, nitrided crank - does not suffer bottom end issues as a result, nor generally does it eat oil which is endemic in many of the 4s - it is an all round great engine of alfa heritage... i'm biased, i LOVE them...

the other great thing about the v6s is the freely available and relatively easy to fit q2/quaife diff ... along with stiffer sway bars it makes all the difference IME (i also have bilstein/eibach combo as well)...

stock, even with VDC, v6s struggle to out the power down out of corners.... no more with the q2

i guess if you were definitely staying with the TS, a decent road map to more power has been provided above... 186bhp from a unit that was probably lying when it said it was pushing 150bhp+ standard, it pretty impressive...

Thanks guys,

Wankski I'd love a V6 but don't have one. I have a spare Ts engine sitting and just wanted some advice on what I could do with it, if i were to have it tuned. What options I'd have that's all. I know the V6 is better and one day I'll have one, no one is saying a ts is better...

My ultimate goal is to keep my gorgeous GTV on the road and maybe running even better if i get the spare engine tuned and put in it. I like the thought of the engine (heart) of my first GTV (love) going into my new baby...
