Well Happy Twinspark cambelt advice

Hey all,

My twinspark has had the metal tensioner fitted to the timing belt at the last change. It has since done 3 years and just under 30000 miles so I'm replacing the belt next weekend.

My question is: with this new tensioner design, does that part need replacement? I know the old plastic ones used to fragment and that is now not possible. The only other possible failure is the bearings.

I feel this is unlikely, so I was going to leave it another 3 years.

Has anyone experienced bearing failure of this kind?

The idler on the other hand is plastic, so I'll replace that.

It brings the total cost down from £80 to just £35.

Edit: I have a feeling the responses might be unanamous about this...

Follow up: just did a search and found a few people say their tensioner failed in other ways... spring related or bearing related.

Will not risk it!!

It's not pointless at all! Everyone is sometimes tempted to save a few quid, threads like this will hopefully show up when they do a search

agreed, on the TS my personal advice is this:
full timing belt kit - incl. tensioner and idler
+ BB belt
+ WP

why the last two? both are pretty cheap on the TS and both can, and have, caused timing belt failure.

Aye... makes me wince when I take the tensioner off though.. they always look immaculate to me (apart from the 110,000 mile old one in the v6.. ) .. but yes, best not be tempted to save a few bob here.
