Cam belt snapped

I have a 156 1.9 JTD M-Jet on a 54 plate. I was driving at 30mph when all went dead and the car stopped, a mechanic i know said the cam belt had snapped and it would cost around £1500+vat to fix, is this right ?

If this is the case then I will have to sell the car as a non runner if anyone is interested.

Sounds very OTT to me. I see you are in flintshire. Give Gus at Alfatune a ring and I'm sure he'll sort you out

Hi, apparently on the 16 valve jtd engines its just the cam followers/rockers which snap off and stop the valves from bending which means it can be repaired without taking the head off, I dont have any first hand experience of this but it is worth looking into.

Chances are that the water pump has seized up and snapped the belt, a common problem

There is a good thread about this in the 156 section under known issues at the top of the page

Are the water pump, cambelt and rockers etc Fiat parts or Alfa parts.

Surely if the head doesnt have to come off this should mean labour costs are lower, how long does this kind of job take ?

That price is double what it should be.

Give Autolusso a call, they have done loads and know what they are talking about. Your mechanic clearly doesn't.

Edit: just looked on Autolusso web site and they are charge £850 INC VAT

To be fair to the fella who said it would probably cost that much it is quiet unusual not to have to take the head off and replace all of the valves after a cam belt failure on most modern engines.

However there is no guaranty that any of the valves wont be bent.

To answer your question about the make of parts then either Fiat or Alfa but the same engine is also used in vauxhall's and Saab's, the code is Z19DTH

He's talking about petrol engines.

Diesels can have what are called "sacrificial rockers" .. they break which saves the saves as they all sit back in their valve seats and avoid contact with the pistons. I think the 1.9 is one of those and should be, as the other guys have mentioned, cheaper and quicker.

The are never going to be totally Fiat/Alfa parts ... Alfa won't make them, but buy them in from companies that make all manner of small engine parts for lots of the manufacturers. Car manufacturing is now more an assembly business and it's only the really specialist companies that can afford to produce parts, rather than get someone else to make them. It's how they save money .. sharing chassis and engines. Even McLaren don't make the pistons for the MP4 .. there was a program on BBC2 recently.

If you have a good motor factors near you, ask. Or give someone like FPS a call (were known as Ferraris Piston Services until a few years ago). I used to get engine parts from them via my wife's uncle who owned a garage in London .. and got them at trade! Unfortunately, he's no longer in the business so now I pay through the nose like everyone else!!

cheers, Gary
