Cam belt change

Hi there

My 147 1,6 is 3 yrs old in a few days but still not reached 60" km yet. In fact its on 52". The cam belt should be changed at 60" or within 3 years. Its is safe to leave the cam belt change for my 60" service - in a few months time - or should i change the cam belt immediately since its past 3 yrs old?

If you think it needs changing, go ahead and do it...is the car sound like a diesel on startup from cold?
If so, get it done sooner rather than later....

Re: Cam belt change

Hi

Thanx for reply.
Yes, the car sounds like a diesel on startup. That should not harm the engine though. Only thing it is much cheaper to change belt + variator when the car is serviced at 60", but i am not sure if i dare to wait for my bella to turn 60" km..

Is there much involved in the 60km service? I can't remember but maybe you should just pull it in early???? Apart from oil & filter, I don't recall it being much else.

Nothing to do with the cambelt.

.....anyway, Alfa recommend changing the belts at 36,000 miles which I guess is about 50,000 kilometres.

Re: Cam belt change

Cambelt (etc..) is every 36000miles/60000km or every 3-years (whichever comes first).

sorry wrinx....the noise is created by the variator which is inevitabley done at the same time as cambelt

Re: Cam belt change

Hi again

The car was serviced at 49", and thats why I would prefer to delay my cam belt change ´till 60" - as that is part of the next service.

But if needs doin now, you can't get away from it.
Get an independent to do it if you live near one. That's what I did and saved €300.

Re: Cam belt change

I had mine changed last friday at Alfa Specialist, car is 3 years old with 54,000 on it. Chap at garage pointed out a 3 year old 156 outside and said it had the cambelt snap at 54,000 and was in his words a 'very expensive job' and went on to tell me several horry stories about cambelt snappig on alfas. Better safe than sorry in my opinion. Had the variator replaced at same time now sounds like a petrol again and there is a noticible preformance change.
